Actor Liam Cunningham told the world that Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz had issued a decree to execute any child caught flying a kite. Former UK Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn called it proof of genocide. The claim spread fast, hit hard, and left out one inconvenient detail: it is completely fabricated. No such decree exists in any official statement, news report, or government document. What Katz actually did on August 24-25, 2026 was order the IDF to treat kites, balloons, and drones launched from Gaza with equal military seriousness – and to target the Hamas commanders orchestrating those launches, not children at play. His actual words: “A balloon is treated like a kite, and a kite is treated like a drone, with or without explosives.”
That is a direct response to a seven-year documented record of Hamas weaponising kites and incendiary balloons to burn Israeli farmland, forests, and communities. It is not a war on childhood. It is a war on arson terrorism dressed up as child’s play.
The Propaganda Playbook, Step by Step
Within hours of Katz’s announcement, Corbyn posted that Israel was treating “paper kites flown by Palestinian children” as weapons of war and called it evidence of genocide. Cunningham went further still, inventing a kill order that appears nowhere in the public record. Hamas did its part too, publicly claiming the kites were “children’s toys from displacement camps.” The IDF assessed the current launches as a Hamas-orchestrated operation – likely a test of Israel’s response – and confirmed the kites found in August 2026 carried no explosives. That last detail matters. Israel is not pretending every paper kite is a bomb. It is refusing to pretend this is innocent play when the same weapon system already burned thousands of acres of Israeli land, when border communities remember what happened before October 7, and when Hamas is once again using children as cover for a military probe.
Israel Has Seen This Movie Before
The kite-and-balloon weapon is not new. Hamas began deploying incendiary kites and balloons as an organised arson campaign in 2018, documented by the IDF, Haaretz, USA Today, and international monitors – not only Israeli government sources.
During Hamas’s 2018 “return march” campaign, scattered incendiary kite launches became centrally orchestrated arson terrorism. The Meir Amit Intelligence Center documented Hamas’s military wing manufacturing devices, transporting them to launch sites in military vehicles, scheduling mass launches, and attaching IEDs to kites and balloons that burned thousands of acres across southern Israel.
The damage was not symbolic. Hamas’s 2018 kite and balloon campaign alone burned over 7,400 acres of Israeli agricultural land and forest, caused more than $3 million in losses to Israeli farmers, killed hundreds of livestock, and sent incendiary balloons landing in Israeli kindergartens. Fires were ignited at Kibbutz Kfar Azza, Nahal Oz, and Kibbutz Be’eri – communities later targeted again on October 7, 2023.
IDF footage from Hamas’s 2018 kite campaign shows Gazans launching kites rigged with explosives and incendiary devices while chanting “Allah willing, the Jews’ hearts will burn.” Hamas’s own operatives framed the arson attacks as a military operation. Not childhood play. Not spontaneous protest. A weapon.
What Katz Actually Ordered – and What Corbyn Left Out
Katz directed action against Hamas military operatives running the launches, not against children. The phrase “decree to execute children” appears nowhere in any official record.
This week alone, at least six kites crossed from Gaza into Israel. The IDF assesses that Gazan children as young as 12 are launching them under Hamas direction – prompting Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Katz to warn on Sunday that continued launches will draw a sharper Israeli response, with Katz declaring “a kite is treated like a drone.”
Israel also issued public strike warnings and evacuation orders in direct response to the kite launches in August 2026. Corbyn and Cunningham omitted that sequence entirely when they framed the operation as an unprovoked assault on children at play.
Residents of Nahal Oz and Kfar Aza – kibbutzim hit hard on October 7 – are not reacting to paper toys. They are reacting to a tactic Hamas used for years to torch their fields, test Israel’s red lines, and generate exactly the kind of international outrage Corbyn and Cunningham just delivered for free.
The Same Script Hamas Wrote in 2018
Corbyn and Cunningham did not make an honest mistake. They ran the Hamas propaganda playbook. Step one: strip all military context. Step two: invoke children. Step three: call it genocide. Cunningham invented a “decree to execute children.” Corbyn presented a documented Hamas arson weapon as innocent childhood play. This is the same script Hamas designed in 2018 when it launched the kite campaign alongside a deliberate PR operation to generate international outrage while its operatives burned Israeli land from the sky. The kites are real. The children framing is a weapon too – aimed at Western audiences.
When a former leader of a major political party and a celebrity actor amplify fabricated kill orders against children, they are not speaking truth to power. They are serving as unpaid spokesmen for a terrorist organisation’s information war.
Israel’s policy targets Hamas commanders who turned kites into weapons of war. The lie targets anyone still willing to believe that calling arson terrorism by its name is the same as declaring war on childhood.
